These charming blooms resemble sombreros and boast a unique and hassle-free growing experience. Thriving even in arid soils with minimal care, these flowers are a delightful variant of the Prairie Coneflower. Similar to its larger counterpart, this somewhat dwarf variety blooms in its first year from seed, gracing the garden with red-brown flowers adorned with yellow tips throughout the summer into autumn. Not only visually appealing, but it also makes an excellent cut flower. These can grow up to 45cm tall.

Useful Information

Sowing & Growing

Sow the seeds from autumn to spring in a cold frame by placing them 2mm deep into moist, well-drained seed compost. Allow the natural winter cold to create optimal germination conditions, and as the weather warms in spring, the seeds prefer nighttime temperature drops. The ideal germination temperature is 20-30°C, and once the weather warms up, germination should occur rapidly. Afterward, transplant the seedlings into individual pots when they are large enough to handle, and grow them under glass. Acclimatize the plants and plant them outdoors after the danger of frost has passed.

These seeds will tolerate most soils, but they thrive in well-drained, lime-rich/chalky soil in full sun. They are easy to grow and should be watered well during hot, dry periods until the plants are established. In terms of cultivation, cut back spent foliage and stems in autumn. While it may be best grown as an annual in the UK, it is, in fact, a hardy perennial that will return year after year.
