This sizable shrub or petite tree, native to montane forests between 600 and 2000 meters from India to Malesia, boasts a flower renowned as one of the most splendidly and intensely scented in the plant kingdom—simply heavenly! While popular in Asia, this tree is relatively new to the British market. Michelias, belonging to the Magnolia family, exhibit slightly smaller and less ornate flowers compared to Magnolias, yet they share the same rich fragrance. This particular Michelia, known for inspiring the “Joy” perfume, grows rapidly, providing ample shade. Regular trimming is advisable to manage its size. Abundant spring blooms can be trimmed as needed after flowering.
You might be curious about the distinctions between M. alba and M. champaca. Aside from the evident difference in flower colour, a few nuances set them apart. M. champaca features velvety leaves, whereas M. alba does not. Additionally, the fragrances of their flowers differ—both are highly pleasant and robust. In our perspective, M. champaca carries a floral scent, while M. alba exhibits a floral fragrance with a subtle hint of fruity notes.

Sowing & Growing
Combine the cleaned seeds with moist sand or vermiculite, then transfer the mixture into a polythene bag and refrigerate for two to four months before sowing under cover. Note that dried seeds often yield less successful results. Once the seedlings are sizable enough to handle, pot them on and nurture them in containers for two or three years before transplanting them into the garden.
To prepare the seeds, extract them from the fruit, cleanse them thoroughly to remove all residues, and let them dry in a warm location. Gently sand the seeds with sandpaper or nick the side of each seed with a sharp knife. Place the seeds in a bowl, covering them with hot water and allowing them to soak overnight until they swell and double in size. If the seeds do not swell, remove them from the water and nick the hard outer shell again. Repeat the soaking process until the seeds swell. Treat the seeds with a fungicide following the manufacturer’s instructions to prevent fungal infections that may harm young seedlings.
Set up 4-inch pots on a tray, filling the bottom third of each pot with high-quality acidic potting soil suitable for azaleas or rhododendrons. Add sterile seed-starting mix to the top two-thirds of the pot. Ensure the soil is thoroughly moist by watering, then place one seed into each pot, barely covering it with seed-starting mix. Cover the pots with plastic wrap and position them in a warm location. Regularly check the soil moisture every two to three days, misting with a spray bottle if it begins to dry out, and replace the plastic wrap to maintain consistent moisture levels. Maintain a constant temperature of 80 to 85 degrees Fahrenheit until germination, which can take between one and five weeks. It’s important to note that champaca has a relatively low germination rate, typically between 40 and 50 percent.

I have just bought all my new seeds for next year’s vegetables after having such great results this year. Budget seeds are so helpful, I’m a newbie in the veg growing world and they have been helpful in choosing the best seeds to start with etc. also much cheaper than elsewhere so if I do mess up in the future it isn’t costing me so much.
