Acer Palmatum Japanese Maple

£1.37 incl. VAT

This small, round-headed tree showcases exquisite deciduous foliage with attractive lobes that transition from mid-green to stunning hues of yellow, orange, or red in the autumn before gracefully descending. During late spring, the tree adorns itself with tiny purple-red flowers arranged in small pendulous clusters. Later in the summer, delightful red winged fruits emerge, gently floating down from the branches when fully ripe.

Sowing & Growing

Guidance on germinating Acers can be quite diverse and may even appear contradictory due to species-specific variations. As a general recommendation, we propose sowing the seeds promptly upon receipt. But begin by soaking the seeds in water for 24 hours. Sow them in moist, well-drained seed compost, followed by a period of cold stratification at 1-8°C for 2-4 months. For autumn planting, a cold frame is ideal, or alternatively, use a refrigerator. Subsequently, bring them back to a warmer environment. Germination may be slow, possibly taking up to 2 years, although seeds planted in a cold frame may sprout in spring. Once the seedlings are sizable enough, transplant them into larger pots and nurture them until they reach a height of 20cm before planting them outdoors.

When trying to grow Acers, it’s important to note their preferences. They thrive in a moist, well-drained soil, and regular watering is advised, especially during the summer months. While they prefer partial shade for optimal leaf colour, they can tolerate full sun, although precautions should be taken to avoid leaf scorch, which may result from inadequate soil moisture or excessive sun exposure. As for growing on, Acers generally do not require routine pruning. However, it’s advisable to remove diseased, damaged, or congested crossing shoots. Pruning is recommended in late autumn to mid-winter, and after pruning, applying mulch and feed contributes to their overall health and growth.
