In Japanese, the term for cherry blossom trees is Sakura, roughly translated as “Japanese flowering cherry,” with the blossoms commonly known as cherry blossoms. Contrary to a common misconception, these trees do not bear cherries; the fruit-bearing cherry tree is a distinct species. The name “cherry blossom tree” is derived from the soft and delicately coloured pastel pink blossoms they display. Renowned for their brief yet enchanting blooming season, these blossoms inevitably fall to the ground. In Japanese culture, this cycle symbolizes the natural course of human life, where rising, blossoming, and falling are integral aspects of our destiny.

Sowing & Growing
For your best chances of germination, it is advisable to subject Sakura seeds to prior treatment through Scarification to weaken the hard outer shell and then Stratification simulating winter conditions.
Rinse the Sakura seeds gently in a sieve. Optionally, use gardening gloves and soak the seeds in a 10% hydrogen peroxide solution for approximately 10 minutes to prevent potential moulding, employing a Scarification method to weaken the hard outer shell. Use tweezers to pick up the seeds and sow them onto the top layers of your growing medium in pots or seed trays, covering them with a thin layer of soil (not exceeding 2 cm). If the seeds have undergone stratification, proceed to transfer the seedlings into the soil.
Expose the seed tray or pot to sunlight whenever possible, as light can enhance germination. Maintain moderate humidity levels by regular watering during the germination period. Germination times can vary widely, occurring naturally over a few weeks to several months. Optionally, but recommended, once germination has occurred or after transferring seedlings from stratification, use a copper-based fungicide to prevent moulding issues, following the instructions on the fungicide label for the appropriate amount and frequency of application.
