Peppers have garnered a devoted following because there are so many varieties and flavours to play with, each with unique tangs and heat levels. Whether chopped and added to various dishes or preserved in hot sauces or infused oils, the possibilities with this fruit are endless.
Chilli plants thrive in warm, humid environments with ample sunlight, making them perfect for greenhouses, polytunnels, conservatories, and even well-lit windowsills. If the climate permits, you can also plant them outside in a south-facing location. Interestingly, chilli peppers share similar preferences to tomatoes, making them ideal growing companions.
While allowing your chillies to mature on the plant can enhance their flavour, it may hinder the production of new flowers, reducing your harvest. To maximise your hard-earned crop, consider picking your chillies when they’re still green. You can use them immediately or allow them to ripen further in the kitchen.
