This extraordinary plant initially forms a rosette resembling a palm tree, featuring large, thick, and hairy leaves on a robust woody stem. Scientifically classified as a ‘triennial,’ it undergoes a unique growth pattern. Approximately 12 or 24 months after sowing, the central part, adorned with thousands of flowers, shoots upward, reaching impressive heights, sometimes up to 15-20 feet! Bees are attracted to this giant, which, if you’re fortunate, may gently self-seed without becoming a nuisance. The seedlings are easily visible and simple to pull up if necessary, provided you have the heart for it! Most plants display a deep blue hue, although occasional variants in colour may emerge. Belonging to the Boraginaceae family, it can be categorized as a half-hardy perennial, hardy perennial, or hardy biennial.

Sowing & Growing
Sow the seeds directly where they are to flower before mid-summer, choosing a well-drained and sheltered spot. Alternatively, if starting indoors, sow the seeds thinly, covering them lightly, in early spring on a quality soil-based compost in a frost-free area with ample light. Expect seedlings to emerge within 2 to 6 weeks. Transfer them to a gritty compost with minimal organic material before eventually planting them out in a well-drained and sheltered spot or a spacious container that can be brought indoors during winter. Typically, these plants will bloom approximately 24 months after the initial sowing.

I have just bought all my new seeds for next year’s vegetables after having such great results this year. Budget seeds are so helpful, I’m a newbie in the veg growing world and they have been helpful in choosing the best seeds to start with etc. also much cheaper than elsewhere so if I do mess up in the future it isn’t costing me so much. I thoroughly recommend Budget Seeds for all your veg and flower seeds.
