A well-established and widely embraced perennial from the aroid family, originally hailing from South Africa, displays broad, fleshy, vivid green leaves and distinctive funnel-shaped inflorescences. This plant is extensively cultivated in warm temperate climates for both its ornamental value and as a source of cut flowers. As a rhizomatous herbaceous perennial, it retains its evergreen nature where sufficient rainfall and favourable temperatures prevail, transitioning to deciduous in regions with pronounced dry seasons.
Thriving in habitats near streams, ponds, or on riverbanks, it reaches a height of 0.6–1 m (2.0–3.3 ft), forming large clusters of broad, arrow-shaped dark green leaves, each extending up to 45 cm (18 in) in length. The impressive inflorescences, appearing in spring, summer, and autumn, feature a pristine white spathe measuring up to 25 cm (9.8 in) and a yellow spadix that can extend up to 90 mm (3 1⁄2 in). Emitting a subtle, sweet fragrance, Aethiopica contributes an elegant touch to its surroundings. It’s important to note that Aethiopica contains calcium oxalate, and the ingestion of the raw plant may induce a severe burning sensation, along with swelling of the lips, tongue, and throat. Additionally, stomach pain and diarrhea may occur.

Sowing & Growing
Prior to sowing, immerse the seed overnight for optimal results. Surface sow one seed per 8cm pot filled with moist, well-drained seed compost. Gently cover the seed with a light sprinkling of soil. Maintain an ideal temperature of 24-27°C during the germination period, which spans from 30 to 90 days. It’s worth noting that even under optimal conditions, germination may be sporadic and prolonged.
As the seedlings develop, let them grow in their pots until the rhizome takes form. Pot them on as needed or acclimatize them before planting outdoors once the risk of frost has subsided. When you observe small plants emerging, gradually open the top of the pot each day to prevent shock from a sudden drop in humidity for the new seedlings. Prick out each seedling as it reaches a manageable size and transplant them into 7.5cm (3in) pots. Exercise caution when handling these plants, as they possess delicate white roots.
