**Collection Only**
The ‘Jonagold’ apple tree (Malus domestica) is a vigorous, award-winning variety valued for its large, high-quality fruit and versatility.
Key Characteristics of Jonagold Trees
  • Fruit Profile: Produces large apples with yellow-green skin and red-orange flushes. The flesh is creamy-white, crisp, and juicy with a balanced sweet-tart, honey-like flavour.
  • Parentage: A hybrid of ‘Golden Delicious’ and ‘Jonathan’, developed in 1943 at the Geneva Research Station, New York.
  • Vigour & Growth: A vigorous, spreading tree that typically reaches 3–4m and is a heavy, reliable cropper.
  • Pollination (Important): It is a triploid variety, meaning it is self-sterile and a poor pollinator for others. It requires two different compatible pollination partners (e.g., ‘Gala’, ‘Falstaff’, or ‘James Grieve’) to ensure fruit set.
Planting and Care (2026 Season)
  • Harvesting: Apples typically ripen in mid-October.
  • Storage: They store well for about 2–4 months if kept cold.
  • Site Selection: Prefers a sheltered, sunny spot with fertile, well-drained soil.
  • Pruning: Best pruned in the dormant winter season (November to March) to maintain an open canopy and remove diseased wood.
Uses
  • Eating: Excellent fresh dessert apple.
  • Cooking: Holds its shape well in pies and tarts.
  • Juicing: High juice content makes it ideal for cider and fresh juice.
  • Large Rootball
  • 4-5ft
