The climbing variation of this exceptional Heirloom Italian favorite yields an abundant harvest of versatile beans, serving a dual (or even triple if you consider the ornamental pods) purpose. These beans can be used as your typical green pod bean or allowed to dry for use as a dry bean. To sow Borlotto bean seeds, begin by selecting a suitable garden location that enjoys ample sunlight and features well-draining soil.

Sowing & Growing
For optimal results in the UK, it is advisable to sow Borlotto bean seeds in mid to late May, ensuring the threat of frost has passed. Prior to sowing, prepare the soil by eliminating weeds and incorporating organic matter, such as compost or well-rotted manure. Create holes in the soil, approximately 2-3cm deep, and place one seed in each hole. Cover the seeds with soil and provide thorough watering. Borlotto beans thrive in warmer temperatures, so it is recommended to sow them when the soil temperature exceeds 12°C. In cooler weather, you can warm the soil by covering it with a plastic sheet for a few days before sowing.
Once the Borlotto bean plants germinate and commence growth, maintain soil moisture without causing waterlogging. As the plants progress, offer support for climbing, using structures like a trellis or cane wigwam. Harvest the Borlotto beans in late summer or early autumn, typically 90-100 days after sowing. Ensure the pods are plump and firm to the touch, avoiding excessive maturation that leads to dried-out beans inside. Simply pick the pods from the plants and extract the beans. These can be enjoyed fresh or dried for future use.

I have just bought all my new seeds for next year’s vegetables after having such great results this year. Budget seeds are so helpful, I’m a newbie in the veg growing world and they have been helpful in choosing the best seeds to start with etc. also much cheaper than elsewhere so if I do mess up in the future it isn’t costing me so much. I thoroughly recommend Budget Seeds for all your veg and flower seeds.
