Sowing & Growing
Sow summer cabbage seeds indoors from February to May, or opt for direct outdoor sowing from late March into a well-prepared seedbed for later transplantation. For outdoor sowing, plant at a depth of 13mm (1/2″) with a row spacing of 23cm (9″). Indoors, sow seeds at a depth of 12mm (1/2″) in trays with free-draining, seed-sowing compost, covering them with a layer of vermiculite. Use a propagator or seal the container inside a plastic bag, maintaining a temperature of 20-25C (68-77F) until germination, which typically takes 4-7 days. Once germinated, grow cabbage plants in cooler conditions until the risk of frost has passed, and they have developed 2-3 true leaves. Gradually acclimate them to outdoor conditions over 7-10 days before planting in moist, rich, well-drained soil with full sun exposure.
For optimal growth, prepare the soil in early spring by incorporating ample well-rotted farmyard manure to enhance structure and fertility. Lime can be added to acidic soils to reduce acidity and mitigate the risk of clubroot. Plant cabbages at a spacing of 50cm (20″) apart, and protect them with netting or fleece to ward off birds and insects. Utilize collars around the plant stems to deter cabbage root fly attacks. Thoroughly water the plants after planting.

I have just bought all my new seeds for next year’s vegetables after having such great results this year. Budget seeds are so helpful, I’m a newbie in the veg growing world and they have been helpful in choosing the best seeds to start with etc. also much cheaper than elsewhere so if I do mess up in the future it isn’t costing me so much. I thoroughly recommend Budget Seeds for all your veg and flower seeds.
