Nelumbo Nucifera Sacred Lotus

£1.99 incl. VAT

Nelumbo nucifera, commonly known as the Indian lotus, sacred lotus, bean of India, or simply lotus, represents one of two aquatic plant species within the Nelumbonaceae family. This plant exhibits perennial aquatic characteristics, and under favourable conditions, its seeds can retain viability for many years. Remarkably, the oldest recorded lotus germination occurred from seeds that were 1,300 years old.

Useful Information

Sowing & Growing

Sow Nelumbo nucifera, the Sacred Lotus, during spring, preferably after scarification, at a minimum temperature of 25°C. To cultivate Sacred Lotus from seed, carefully file down one side of the seed using sandpaper until a small amount of white colour is visible, and then submerge the seed in water. Within a few days, the Sacred Lotus seed will swell and typically sprout within a week, showing rapid growth in the subsequent weeks. The seed contains sufficient nutrients to sustain the plant for about 30 days, but it is advisable to plant it as soon as practically possible.

Plant the scarified seed in a pot with ample space for root expansion both below and around the seed (a minimum of 4 inches is recommended). Submerge the pot in water, ensuring that the top is positioned between 12 and 18 inches below the water surface. Expect the emergence of leaves within a month, and the plant is likely to bloom during the second growing season.
