An excellent slender palm forming a single stem topped with a shuttlecock shaped crown of stiff leaves. The unusual feature of this palm is its bright scarlet red stems and leaf ribs – quite a talking point! A tropical palm, it needs a minimum temperature of 10C making it ideal as a houseplant or patio container plant moved to a frost free place in winter.

Sow at any time of year.
Pre-sowing Treatment; Soak the seeds for 48 hours preferably in a heated propagator, or on a sunny windowsill or above a radiator.
Sowing; Sow 6mm deep in small pots of moist seed compost mixed 50:50 with vermiculite. Place in a propagator or cover with a polythene bag and place in any other warm place (eg. on a windowsill above a radiator) and maintain at 25-30C. Many palms will produce a root before a shoot and germination can be erratic and take many months.
Growing; Grow the seedlings on, re-potting as necessary. Plant in good quality compost mixed 75:25 vermiculite or perlite and place in a bright spot. Keep well watered at all times. Move outdoors in summer to a sheltered spot.

I have just bought all my new seeds for next year’s vegetables after having such great results this year. Budget seeds are so helpful, I’m a newbie in the veg growing world and they have been helpful in choosing the best seeds to start with etc. also much cheaper than elsewhere so if I do mess up in the future it isn’t costing me so much. I thoroughly recommend Budget Seeds for all your veg and flower seeds.
