Red Skin Peanut

£1.25

It’s a common revelation that peanuts aren’t nuts at all; rather, they are the seeds of a leguminous plant, belonging to the same family as peas and beans. What makes the peanut plant distinct is that its flowers grow above ground, while the pods containing the seeds develop in the soil.

Sowing & Growing

To start indoors, fill a large, four-inch-deep plastic bowl two-thirds full with moist potting soil. Place four peanuts on top of the soil and cover them with an additional inch of soil. The plants will sprout quickly. Once the threat of frost has passed, transplant the seedlings outside.

For outdoor planting, sow peanut seeds two inches deep and eight inches apart in loose, well-drained soil. Enhance the soil with sand and aged compost to promote looseness. Plant anytime between April and late June, with the optimal time being the first week of May when the soil is warm and moist. Germination is most successful between 18-35°C.

When the plants reach six inches in height, cultivate around them to loosen the soil for easy penetration of the pegs. Hill the plants as you would potatoes and mulch with two inches of straw or grass clippings. Small, yellow, pea-like flowers will emerge along the lower part of the stem. After the flowers fade, the ovaries will swell, grow toward the ground, and then push into the soil.

Peanuts are ready for harvest before frost, indicated by the yellowing of the plant. Use a spading fork to dig out the entire plant, shake off most of the soil, and hang it indoors to dry for about a month.
