Red Sunflowers; These great big red flowers on tall, erect plants are particularly good for cutting. This is a spectacular and unusual variety – one of our favourites. 5ft (1.5m)

Yellow Sunflowers; Surely a plant that needs no introduction. Worthy of a place in any garden and a favourite for children to grow. Incidentally, an ideal plant to grow in a large clump at the foot of large trees or near the edge of a pool. They are surprisingly tolerant of partial shade. There are now also plenty of varieties that are great for cutting – big and dramatic and, of particular interest to the writer – no skill required for arranging! Just stick them in a (large) vase.

Useful Information

Sowing & Growing

To sow Autumn Beauty Sunflowers in the UK, choose a location that receives full sun and has well-draining soil. The best time for sowing is from mid-April to early June, when the soil has warmed up and there is no longer a risk of frost.

Start by preparing the soil by removing any weeds and adding compost or well-rotted manure to improve soil fertility. Make shallow trenches in the soil, approximately 1cm deep, and sow the sunflower seeds about 30cm apart. Cover the seeds with soil and gently firm down.

Water the soil lightly and keep it consistently moist but not too wet. Autumn Beauty Sunflowers grow best in temperatures between 20-25°C. If temperatures exceed this range, the plants may struggle to grow and may not produce flowers. To help regulate temperature, consider planting in an area with afternoon shade or providing shade during the hottest parts of the day.

As the sunflowers grow, they will require regular watering, especially during periods of drought. Fertilize the plants every few weeks with a balanced fertilizer to help promote healthy growth and flowering. In the UK, Autumn Beauty Sunflowers typically begin to bloom in late summer and continue to flower into early autumn. The large, vibrant blooms come in a range of colours, from deep reds and oranges to pale yellows and creams. Harvest the sunflower seeds once the flowers have died back and the heads have turned brown and dry.

Overall, growing Autumn Beauty Sunflowers is a fun and rewarding experience, and with the right care, you can enjoy beautiful and vibrant blooms in your garden throughout the late summer and autumn months.
