Sowing & Growing
Sow lettuce seeds directly outdoors from March to August in well-prepared, fertile, and moist soil exposed to sun or partial shade. Plant the seeds thinly, at a depth of 1cm (1/2″), in drills spaced 30cm (12″) apart, ensuring the soil is finely raked. Once the seedlings are sufficiently large, thin them out to 30cm (12″) apart, and shield them with protective netting or fleece to ward off birds and insects. To maintain a continuous supply, make regular sowings.
Frequently water the lettuce and regularly hoe between plants to prevent weed growth. In dry conditions, there’s a risk of lettuce plants bolting, so diligent watering is particularly crucial in the two weeks leading up to harvesting. Applying a thick mulch around the plants aids in retaining soil moisture. Harvest the lettuce as needed by pulling up the entire plant and trimming off the stem with a knife.

I have just bought all my new seeds for next year’s vegetables after having such great results this year. Budget seeds are so helpful, I’m a newbie in the veg growing world and they have been helpful in choosing the best seeds to start with etc. also much cheaper than elsewhere so if I do mess up in the future it isn’t costing me so much. I thoroughly recommend Budget Seeds for all your veg and flower seeds.
