Organic Rocket

£0.39

Rocket, also known as arugula, is an annual plant belonging to the Brassicaceae family. It is cultivated as a leaf vegetable prized for its fresh, tangy, bitter, and peppery flavour. Common alternate names for this plant include garden rocket, “ruchtetta,” “rucola,” “rucoli,” “rugula,” “colewort,” and “roquette.” Typically reaching a height of 20–100 cm, it displays deeply pinnately lobed leaves with four to ten small lateral lobes and a prominent terminal lobe. The flowers, organized in a corymb, have a standard Brassicaceae structure, featuring creamy white petals with purple veins, yellow stamens, and persistent sepals after the flower unfolds, measuring 2–4 cm in diameter.

Useful Information

Sowing & Growing

Rocket seeds can be successfully grown indoors on a windowsill during the winter months. For outdoor cultivation, sow the seeds directly into well-drained, prepared soil, placing them one at a time in rows. A one-meter row is adequate to begin with. Sow the seeds 6mm deep, maintaining a spacing of 3cm, and keep the rows 60cm apart. Water in using a watering can with a rose attachment, and expect germination within 7 days.

Growing: Once the seedlings are large enough to handle, thin them to 20cm. The thinnings are suitable for use in salads. This variety establishes itself quickly, even in cold soils. Ensure thorough watering in dry weather conditions.

Cultivation: To protect your rocket from flea beetles, cover the row with horticultural fleece. Regularly pick the leaves for a supply of tender greens, noting that older leaves tend to be tougher and spicier. Consistent watering helps prevent premature bolting. Late summer sowings can be harvested throughout the winter under cloches.
