Useful Information

Sowing & Growing

Begin soil preparation in autumn by digging over the soil, removing stones, incorporating well-rotted organic matter, and firming the ground. For early production, sow indoors in March, plant out in April, and harvest from November. For direct sowing, sow outdoors from April to mid-June, aiming for harvesting between January and May. Sow indoors thinly into modules, with germination taking 7-14 days at 15-18°C. Once seedlings reach 8cm, they are ready for planting out. Water the day before transplanting and ensure consistent watering until the plants are established. For outdoor transplanting, plant 25mm deep in a drill with 60cm spacing. Alternatively, direct sow 12mm deep in rows spaced 15cm apart. Keep the soil consistently moist. Once germinated, thin to 60cm.

Water the plants for the first few weeks until they are established. Protect them from Cabbage White butterflies and pigeons, with netting being an ideal solution. Shake off any snow that accumulates over winter. Depending on the size and weight of the plants, staking may be necessary. Regularly remove any yellowing or fallen leaves and burn them to prevent fungal diseases.
