Sow the Ruffled Fan Palm seeds indoors throughout the year. The germination process typically takes 3-6 months, although faster results have been observed. Begin by soaking the seeds in slightly warm water for two days, changing the water daily to initiate germination. Drain the seeds and remove any attached orange tufts.

Prepare a seed tray or pots with a well-draining soil mix, consisting of 50/50 compost and vermiculite or horticultural sand. Moisturize the compost without saturating it. Scarify each tropical plant seed, placing them one inch deep and lightly covering them with compost.

Create a greenhouse-like atmosphere by covering the tray with clear plastic, allowing light to penetrate. Position it in the warmest and brightest spot in your house, avoiding direct sunlight during germination. Maintain moist soil without saturation until germination occurs. Monitor the plastic covering, and if water is dripping, loosen it slightly for ventilation to prevent seed rot.

Germination typically takes 3-6 months; remove the plastic covering once the seeds sprout. Transplant each seedling into individual pots when they have two true leaves, watering thoroughly. Keep the pots in indirect sunlight, maintaining moist compost through bottom watering.

Top tip: Avoid exposing your Fan Palms to excessive sunlight, as it can cause browning of the leaves. Keep them in partial to full shade for optimal growth.
