Dictamnus Albus Rose

£1.25 incl. VAT

A captivating choice for backgrounds, cottage gardens, and group plantings, Dictamnus Albus was once a prevalent garden plant, though it is less commonly seen today, possibly due to its slow establishment. However, once rooted, it proves to be an exceptionally enduring plant. During hot weather, aged flowers or seed pods release a flammable oil that, under windless summer evenings, can be ignited with a match, resulting in a brief and harmless vapor burn—a characteristic that inspired its common name.

Dictamnus Albus is a widespread clump-forming perennial, showcasing feathery lemon-scented leaves reaching approximately 35 cm in length. Its white flowers emerge on spikes up to 90 cm tall during the summer, each measuring around 2 to 3 cm across. Thriving in full sun or partial shade, it prefers a moderately fertile, well-drained soil. Fully hardy down to -15°C, this plant attains a height of around 90 cm and a spread of approximately 60 cm.

Useful Information

Sowing & Growing

Sow the seeds indoors at any time, or in a cold frame during autumn, using moist and well-drained seed compost. Maintain an ideal temperature of 23°C for 6-8 weeks, followed by a cold stratification period at 4°C for another 6-8 weeks. Bring the seeds back to warmth for germination, gradually increasing the temperature to 10°C. Seedlings should emerge within 2 months; if not, repeat the warm/cold cycle. When utilizing a cold frame, the natural temperature variations of autumn into winter create favourable conditions for germination in spring as the weather warms. It’s worth noting that this seed often requires multiple cold treatments and may not germinate until the second year.

Transplant the seedlings when they are large enough to handle, acclimatize them, and plant them out after the danger of frost has passed. This plant prefers well-drained, moderately fertile soil in full or partial sun. For cultivation, cut back to the base of the plant in autumn. To propagate, use fresh seeds and place them in a cold frame during autumn.
