Useful Information

Sowing & Growing

Sowing for this annual plant typically begins indoors from March to April. With a mature height of 18 inches (40cm), it blooms in the summer and autumn, showcasing vibrant yellow and brown colours. For successful indoor germination, start the seeds indoors four to six weeks before the last frosts. Sow them in trays or pots with compost, ensuring a spacing of at least 2.5cm (1in) between seeds. Lightly cover the seeds with fine soil, as they require light for germination. Maintain soil moisture during this germination period. Once the plants reach a height of 3 to 5cm (1 to 2in), transplant them into 7cm (3in) pots and continue growing.

For a successful transition to the outdoors, acclimatize the indoor-started seedlings gradually after the risk of frost has passed. Plant them 25 to 30cm (10 to 12in) apart.

Alternatively, sowing directly outdoors is recommended from April to July. Prepare the soil by adding compost and all-purpose fertilizer before sowing. Choose a sunny location, and sow seeds 5 to 7cm (2 to 3in) apart in rows with a spacing of 30cm (12in). Cover the seeds with soil, ensuring they receive light for germination. Keep the soil consistently moist until the seeds germinate within 5 to 10 days. Once the seedlings reach 5cm (2in) in height, thin them to a spacing of 25 to 30cm (10 to 12in) apart. This plant thrives in fertile, rich, and well-drained soil, typically germinating within 7 to 14 days.
