Yellow Flag Iris

£0.89 incl. VAT

Of all our native plants, none can rival in stately beauty this native representative of the Irises. One of the most distinguished plants, it is found in the marginal vegetation of watery places, on river-banks, by the side of lakes and ponds, in ditches and hedges, any moist, shady place will suit it. It is not considered to be threatened. In fact it is often introduced to newly-created ponds and lakes as a desirable marginal plant and is quite worthy of a place in our gardens.

The flowers of this hardy perennial are 7 to 10cm (3 to 4in) across and can vary from a pale yellow to deeper orange-yellow; each plant may bear up to twelve flowers. The long, stiff leaves are erect and sword-like with a bluish tinge and a prominent midrib, they can grow up to 90cm (3ft) long. Ideal for wildlife gardens, it looks particularly good if planted in naturalised drifts among other moisture-loving plants. It also associates well with dark blue flowered plants. In ideal conditions the yellow Iris can spread quickly, if you don’t have room for a large pond or bog garden, try growing it in a large container filled with water.

Useful Information

Sowing & Growing

Sow indoors Mar-Sep. Sow outside/ under glass Sep-Mar. Soak seeds in hot water (not boiling) for 24 hours prior to sowing.

Indoors, place seeds and some damp kitchen roll into a small plastic bag. Place in the fridge at 4°C. for 2-3 months. Check seeds regularly as germination can occur while in the fridge. Move to 5-12°C. for germination. Transplant seedlings into 8cm pots as soon as they germinate.

To sow outside, soak seeds, then sow 6mm deep into moist well-drained seed compost. Place in a sheltered part of the garden or cold frame/ greenhouse. Allow natural winter cold to offer ideal conditions for germination to occur. Germination takes 30-180 days, do not discard the seed pots prematurely. Grow seedlings on in a cool place. Plant out after hardening off.

Prefers a wet, deep, acid, humus-rich soil in full sun or partial shade. It thrives on pond or stream margins. Vigorous, so site carefully. Propagate via division from midsummer to early autumn, plant immediately in flowering positions. Remove any dying foliage in autumn.
