Squash Gourd Sweet Dumpling

£0.75

In every aspect, this presents a charming introduction. It takes the form of a petite, spherical gourd, roughly the size of a croquet ball, resembling a skillfully sculpted piece from the most exquisite, deep green-veined marble. Their ornamental appeal is undeniable, and owing to their excellent shelf life, they serve as tasteful adornments for the home. However, the primary inclusion here is due to the fact that these fruits are not only highly decorative but also exceptionally delectable when prepared, especially when stuffed with meat and baked. Measuring at a modest 1½ feet (45cm), these gourds offer a delightful combination of aesthetic charm and culinary pleasure.

Useful Information

Sowing & Growing

Sow Sweet Dumpling Squash seeds between April to May under glass or directly outdoors from mid-May to June. Prevent rotting by sowing seeds on the edge at a depth of 1.5cm (1/2″) in pots or trays during April to May. Space seeds 2.5cm (1″) apart under glass at 20°C using high-quality seed sowing compost. For outdoor sowing from mid-May to June, plant seeds 1.5cm (1/2″) deep, placing 2 to 3 seeds in each position with a spacing of 90-100cm (36-40″) apart.

After greenhouse sowings develop the first pair of rough leaves, gradually harden them off and transplant to the growing site in late May to early June, keeping a spacing of 90-100cm (36-40″) once the risk of frost has passed. Thinning to one plant per station is recommended for outdoor sowings.

Expect Sweet Dumpling Squash maturity between September to October. A useful tip is that the harvested fruits store well for up to 5 months in a warm and dry place, making them available for use throughout the winter months.
