Squash Patisson White

£0.89

The Patisson Blanc, a French pumpkin variety, showcases flat, plate-shaped, and white fruits that can be utilized much like zucchini. When harvested in their youthful state as a summer squash, these pumpkins boast a delicate lemon flavour and don’t necessitate peeling. Allowing them to mature further results in a harder skin and firmer pulp, making them still edible, but their primary appeal transitions towards ornamental use. The fully ripened, white Patisson, often referred to as UFO pumpkin due to its characteristic colour and smooth, wart-free surface, becomes a popular choice for decorative purposes. The variety ‘Custard White’ is synonymous with this unique and visually striking pumpkin type.

Useful Information

Sowing & Growing

For an early start in mid to late April, place a single seed edgeways, approximately 1/2 inch deep, in seed compost within a 3-inch pot. Temperature is crucial at this stage, requiring a continuous soil temperature of at least 65°F (preferably higher for optimal germination rates). To achieve this, a propagator, well-heated greenhouse, or airing cupboard is ideal. It’s important to maintain soil moisture, watering generously around the plants rather than directly over them. Keep the growing area weed-free to facilitate proper air circulation.

As the plants progress and the fruits begin to swell, feed them every 14 days with a tomato-type fertilizer, as these plants have high nutrient requirements. For larger fruiting varieties, it’s advisable to limit the number of fruits to 2-3, while for giant pumpkins, restricting it to one is recommended to ensure robust growth and development.
