Useful Information

Sowing & Growing

Sow pumpkin seeds in March to April or August to September for overwintering, aiming for an optimum germination temperature of 15-18°C. Plant the seeds outdoors where they will flower in spring or autumn, and thin them out to 12 inches (30cm) apart. Space the plants 30cm (12 inches) apart in full sun, within regular garden soil.

Provide regular feeding and watering for the pumpkins. When cultivating pumpkins, apply a thick organic mulch around the plants to retain moisture at the roots. Regularly hoe between the plants to prevent weed growth. As pumpkins grow, they may produce long stems that can be trained in a circle around the plant to control their spread.

Allow pumpkins to remain on the plant for as long as possible, waiting until the skin has hardened, and the fruits begin to crack near the stem. Harvest pumpkins before the first frosts by cutting each fruit from the stem, leaving several inches of the stem attached.
