Prunus avium, known as wild cherry, sweet cherry, gean, or bird cherry, belongs to the rose family, Rosaceae. This native tree stands out as possibly the most appealing among our indigenous trees. It graces the landscape with stunning clouds of blossoms in spring, often referred to as cherry blossom, while its vibrant summer fruits add a splash of vivid colour. As autumn arrives, the warm-hued leaves transition to a deep crimson, casting a warm glow over your garden. The estimated full-grown height of the wild cherry is between 18 to 25 meters, with an annual growth rate of approximately 20-40cm.

Sowing & Growing
Sow the seeds indoors at any time or in a cold frame during autumn. Prepare a mixture of 1:1 seed compost and sharp sand or vermiculite, ensuring it is moist but not saturated. Add the seeds to the mixture and place it in a freezer bag, allowing a small air gap or tying it loosely. Put the bag in the fridge at 4°C for 9-10 weeks. If germination occurs during this period, pot up the seeds; otherwise, after 10 weeks, sow them 2mm deep into moist compost at an ideal temperature of 15-20°C. Avoid exposure to temperatures exceeding 25°C, as this may induce dormancy. Keep the soil moist. Once the seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant them to 8cm pots and grow for 2-3 years before planting in their final position. Alternatively, sow in a cold frame during autumn, relying on natural winter cold for germination in spring, although it may take up to 18 months.
Prefers any moist but well-drained soil in full sun. Well-suited for hedging. Belongs to pruning group 1. Routine pruning is not necessary. Perform pruning if required from October to March. After pruning, apply mulch and feed the plant.
