The ‘Yellow Eckendorf’ is a well-known heirloom cultivar of the mangelwurzel (Beta vulgaris). Like other mangelwurzels, it is a type of fodder beet that was historically developed to provide a high-yield, storable food source for livestock during the winter months.
Root Appearance: It produces very large, yellow-skinned, cylindrical roots.
Yield & Size: It is highly productive and known for its ability to grow to massive sizes, with individual roots capable of reaching weights in excess of 15 kg (over 30 lbs) under ideal growing conditions.
Storage: Like other mangel varieties, the ‘Yellow Eckendorf’ is valued for its excellent storage capabilities, making it a reliable crop to keep in a cool, dark place or “clamp” for winter use.
Hardiness: It is best suited to cooler climates, where its deep roots and robust growth can thrive.
While many mangelwurzels have red or orange skins, the ‘Yellow Eckendorf’ is specifically prized for its bright yellow exterior and pale, sweet flesh. Its name often appears in historical agricultural records as a standard for high-volume, dependable fodder production.
Livestock Feed: Its primary historical and modern use is as a nutritious, high-sugar winter supplement for cattle, pigs, sheep, and other livestock.
Human Consumption: Although bred for animals, ‘Yellow Eckendorf’ is perfectly edible for humans. Like other mangels, it is best harvested when younger and smaller for culinary use (e.g., roasted, boiled, or mashed), as the massive, older roots can become coarse or woody.
Dual-Purpose: Gardeners often grow it for its dual benefits: providing both edible, chard-like leaves throughout the summer and large, sugar-rich roots for autumn harvest.
