Sowing & Growing
Before starting, it’s recommended to soak the seeds overnight to enhance germination and growth.
Sow the seeds in a warm environment with a temperature of at least 65 degrees Fahrenheit, planting them ½” to ¾” deep. This should be done approximately 4 weeks before the last expected frost, preferably under cover for seed protection. Germination typically takes around 18 to 22 days.
After the seedlings have sprouted, thin them out by removing weaker seedlings that may not transplant well.
Once the seedlings reach a height of 3-4 inches, start acclimating them to the outdoors after the danger of frost has passed. Choose a warm, sheltered location with good drainage, full sun, and warmth. Provide sturdy support for the growing plants.
From germination to maturity, it usually takes around 110 days for the gourds. Plant them at least 24 inches apart to allow for proper growth. Avoid excessive feeding, as it can reduce crop yield. The gourds may start slowly but will grow faster as they become established and experience warmer weather. Keep the soil consistently moist throughout the summer, ceasing watering in the autumn as the fruits mature.
Harvest mature gourds in the autumn when they turn brown and dry, eventually changing to a yellow/brown color. They will feel lighter, and the outer skin will become loose. Harvest any remaining gourds before the first frost.
To process the gourds, remove the blossom end cap, revealing a vascular bundle that can be pulled up like a zipper. Within this bundle, find a wet, white sponge. Quickly rinse the sponge in water to prevent plant juices from oxidizing. This is also the time to remove the seeds. If desired, whiten the sponges by rinsing them in a 10% bleach solution.

I have just bought all my new seeds for next year’s vegetables after having such great results this year. Budget seeds are so helpful, I’m a newbie in the veg growing world and they have been helpful in choosing the best seeds to start with etc. also much cheaper than elsewhere so if I do mess up in the future it isn’t costing me so much. I thoroughly recommend Budget Seeds for all your veg and flower seeds.
