Useful Information

Sowing & Growing

For an early start in mid to late April, place a single seed edgeways, approximately 1/2 inch deep, in seed compost within a 3-inch pot. Temperature is crucial at this stage, requiring a continuous soil temperature of at least 65°F (preferably higher for optimal germination rates). To achieve this, a propagator, well-heated greenhouse, or airing cupboard is ideal. It’s important to maintain soil moisture, watering generously around the plants rather than directly over them. Keep the growing area weed-free to facilitate proper air circulation.

As the plants progress and the fruits begin to swell, feed them every 14 days with a tomato-type fertilizer, as these plants have high nutrient requirements. For larger fruiting varieties, it’s advisable to limit the number of fruits to 2-3, while for giant pumpkins, restricting it to one is recommended to ensure robust growth and development.
