Japanese Mint Plant

£4.99

Japanese Mint (Mentha arvensis var. piperascens), known locally in Japan as Hakuka (ハッカ), is a highly distinct and powerhouse variety of wild mint.

Among all plants in the Mentha genus, Japanese mint is world-renowned for having the highest natural concentration of menthol—often making up 70% to 90% of its essential oils. Because of this, it delivers an intensely icy, almost medicinal cooling sensation that easily eclipses standard peppermint or spearmint.

Practical & Commercial Uses

Because its menthol content is so potent, Japanese mint is rarely consumed in large culinary quantities like standard spearmint. Instead, it is highly prized for extraction and targeted applications:

  • Natural Menthol Crystals & Oils: This plant is the primary source used globally to manufacture natural menthol crystals, which are utilized in everything from muscle rubs and throat lozenges to cooling cosmetics.

  • Bracing Teas: Just a single leaf or two steeped in hot water creates an incredibly potent herbal tea that is exceptional for clearing blocked sinuses, soothing a sore throat, or cooling down on a humid summer day.

  • Traditional Japanese Confections: The extracted oil (Hakka-yu) is used very sparingly to flavor traditional candies, drops, and refreshing summer ice creams.

  • Natural Pest Deterrent: Because insects and rodents are highly sensitive to strong menthol, planting Japanese mint around foundations or placing dried leaves in pantries acts as a highly effective, natural pest repellent.
