Sowing & Growing
German Chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla) is a wonderful herb that is easy to grow, making it a great choice for beginner gardeners. With its delicate, daisy-like flowers and sweet, apple-like fragrance, German Chamomile is a delightful addition to any garden.
To get started with sowing German Chamomile seeds, choose a suitable location in your garden with well-draining soil and good air circulation. German Chamomile thrives in full sun but can also tolerate partial shade. Loosen the soil to a depth of at least 6 inches (15 cm) and remove any weeds or rocks. You can add compost or organic matter to enrich the soil and improve drainage.
Sprinkle the German Chamomile seeds over the soil surface and lightly press them down with your finger. The seeds are tiny, so you don’t need to bury them deep into the soil. Space the seeds about 6-8 inches (15-20 cm) apart. Use a watering can or hose with a gentle spray nozzle to water the soil thoroughly. Avoid over-watering, as excessive moisture can cause the seeds to rot.
Check the soil regularly and water it as needed to keep it moist but not waterlogged. Germination typically occurs within 7-14 days. Once the seedlings have grown to about 2 inches (5 cm) tall, thin them to a spacing of about 12 inches (30 cm) apart to allow enough room for each plant to grow.
German Chamomile plants are relatively low-maintenance but still require some care. Water the plants regularly, especially during dry spells, and fertilize them with a balanced fertilizer once a month. By following these simple steps, you can successfully grow German Chamomile from seeds, even if you are a beginner gardener. Enjoy the beautiful and fragrant blooms, and use the flowers to make a soothing cup of tea or for other natural remedies.
