Echium Pink Fountain

£1.75 incl. VAT

This plant is perhaps the most coveted in gardens during May and June. It’s a remarkable hybrid, combining the stunning features of Echium wildpretii with its robust four-foot, crimson spike, and the towering blue giant, Echium pininana. The outcome is a spectacular 15-inch wide, tapering tower adorned with delicate pink flowers, resembling a lighthouse and standing impressively between 3-4.5 meters tall. This botanical masterpiece is a magnet for bees, butterflies, and various pollinating insects. While the predominant colour is pink, occasional variant hues add to the allure, making each variation highly desirable.

Useful Information

Sowing & Growing

Start indoors from late May to July by sowing seeds 3mm deep in moist, well-drained seed compost. The ideal temperature for germination is around 21°C, and this process typically takes 21-45 days. Once the seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant them into 8cm pots. Overwinter them in a cool greenhouse, conservatory, or on a well-lit windowsill at a temperature of 7°C. Plant them outdoors the following spring with a spacing of 90cm.

This plant thrives in well-drained, consistently moist soil in full sun. It requires two winters to pass before it begins flowering. Alternatively, it can be cultivated in a 30cm pot within a cool greenhouse.

While reasonably cold-hardy, it’s advisable to protect the base of the plant over the winter months.
