Femspot stands out as an F1 Hybrid cucumber, ranking among the top-selling varieties in the UK. These plants exhibit robust growth, maturing earlier than many other cucumber varieties. Throughout the summer, you can savour the ribbed, bitter-free fruits. While it thrives as an ideal greenhouse crop, Femspot can also be cultivated outdoors in a sunny, sheltered spot in your garden or allotment. In fact, it has demonstrated exceptional performance as one of the best all-female varieties for outdoor production.

Sowing & Growing
Start Cucumber Femspot seeds under cover starting late April, preferably indoors or in a heated propagator. Sow them approximately 2 cm deep in fine seed sowing compost, given the challenge of cucumber germination. Use one cucumber seed per small pot or seed cell, ensuring the compost stays moist. Germination typically takes 7-10 days at around 17-20 Celsius, although for optimal results, it’s recommended to germinate cucumbers at approximately 27 Celsius.
The key with cucumbers is to transfer the seedlings to a cooler environment after germination to slow down initial growth. Once the plants have developed 3-4 pairs of true leaves, acclimatize them to the conditions of the greenhouse or polytunnel. When they’re large enough to handle, transplant them into larger pots and keep them indoors until the last chance of frost has passed.
Cucumber Femspot prefers a sunny location with well-drained, rich soil. It can be grown in a greenhouse, polytunnel, conservatory, or in a very warm, sheltered spot in your garden or allotment. Ensure thorough watering during growth, especially during flowering, as drying out can negatively impact flower setting. Feed the plants weekly for the highest production.
This prolific variety can yield an abundance of cucumbers. In optimal conditions, a single plant may produce more than a family can consume. Consider making cucumber water—an excellent and refreshing drink for a summer evening after a day of hard work in your garden.
