Useful Information

Sowing & Growing

Sowings can be made in trays or modules under glass at a temperature of 13°C. Later sowings can be placed in a seed bed, creating shallow drills 2 cm (3/4″) deep in short rows.

Once the glasshouse seedlings show their first pair of leaves, prick them off into trays spaced 5 cm (2″) apart or thin out the modules to one seedling per cell. Gradually harden them off before planting out, spacing the plants 45 cm (18 in) apart and 60 cm (24 in) between rows. For outdoor sowings, thin the plants to 7-10 cm (3-4 in) apart. When the plants reach 15 cm (6 in) tall, they can be lifted and transplanted into their final positions, spaced as previously described.

Harvest will occur between August and October.

A helpful tip: Cabbages should not be grown on the same ground for two consecutive years. Always plant them in firm, fertile soil that has been well dug in advance of planting.
