Useful Information

Sowing & Growing

It is very important to remember that most beetroot seeds are clusters of more than one seed. This means if you sow one seed, you will have three to five seedlings germinating. These have to be thinned to one seedling soon after germination otherwise the beetroot will remain very small. Direct sow beetroot seeds outdoors from March to July in a weed free, sunny position in fertile, light, well-drained soil. Sow beetroot seeds thinly in shallow drills at a depth of 3cm (1″) and 30cm (12″) apart. Germination will usually take 12 to 24 days. When large enough to handle, thin out the seedlings within each row to 10cm (4″) apart.

Growing Conditions

To successfully grow Boltardy beetroots, consider the following conditions:

  • Light: Boltardy beets thrive in full sun, requiring at least 6 to 8 hours of direct sunlight each day for optimal growth.
  • Soil: Well-draining, fertile soil rich in organic matter is essential. A slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.0 to 7.0) is ideal for healthy growth.
  • Watering: Consistent moisture is crucial for beetroots. Water regularly to keep the soil evenly moist, especially during dry spells, but avoid waterlogging, which can lead to rot.

Planting Boltardy Beetroot Seeds

  1. Sowing: Plant Boltardy beetroot seeds directly in the garden in early spring or late summer, depending on your climate. Sow seeds about 1 inch apart and 15mm deep in well-prepared soil.
  2. Thinning: Once seedlings are about 2 inches tall, thin them to about 3 to 4 inches apart to allow for proper growth and development.

Care Tips

  • Fertilization: Use a balanced fertiliser or one high in potassium to promote healthy root development. Apply it according to package instructions, typically at planting and again mid-season.
  • Weed Control: Keep the area around the beetroots free of weeds, as they can compete for nutrients and water. Mulching can help suppress weeds and retain soil moisture.
  • Pest Management: Monitor for common pests such as aphids and beetles. Use organic pest control methods if necessary, such as insecticidal soap or neem oil.

Harvesting

Boltardy beetroots are typically ready to harvest when they reach about 2 to 3 inches in diameter, usually around 50 to 60 days after planting. Gently pull the beets from the soil, being careful not to damage them. You can also harvest the greens, which are edible and nutritious.

Culinary Uses

Boltardy beetroots are incredibly versatile in the kitchen. Here are some delicious ways to enjoy them:

  • Salads: Use raw, grated Boltardy beets in salads for a pop of colour and sweetness.
  • Roasting: Roast them with olive oil, salt, and herbs for a flavourful side dish.
  • Soups: Incorporate them into soups for added sweetness and colour, such as in borscht.
  • Pickling: Pickle the beets for a tangy addition to sandwiches and salads.

Health Benefits

Boltardy beetroots are rich in essential nutrients, including vitamins A, C, and K, as well as folate and manganese. They are also high in antioxidants and dietary fibre, making them a healthy addition to your diet.

Beetroot Boltardy is an excellent choice for gardeners looking to grow a reliable and flavourful variety.
