Wild rocket (also called arugula or roquette) is a leafy green vegetable known for its bold, peppery flavour.
It usually refers to Diplotaxis tenuifolia, a more intensely flavoured relative of the common salad rocket, Eruca sativa.
🌿 Leaves: Dark green, long, narrow, and deeply lobed with jagged edges
🌼 Flowers: Small, yellow flowers (when allowed to bolt)
🌱 Texture: Tender but slightly firmer than regular rocket
🌶️ Taste: Strong, peppery, slightly bitter, and spicy
Perennial plant (comes back year after year in mild climates)
Grows well in cooler temperatures
More drought-tolerant and hardy than regular rocket
Wild rocket is commonly used in:
Fresh salads
Pizza toppings (added after baking)
Pasta dishes
Sandwiches and wraps
Pesto
Its intense flavour means a small amount goes a long way
Here’s how wild rocket (Diplotaxis tenuifolia) differs from regular rocket (Eruca sativa):
Wild Rocket
Stronger, sharper peppery flavour
More pronounced bitterness
Slightly spicy, lingering heat
Regular Rocket
Milder and slightly nutty
Less bitter
Softer, more delicate flavour
👉 In short: wild rocket has a more intense “kick,” while regular rocket is gentler and more versatile for people who prefer milder greens.

Sowing & Growing
Sow directly outdoors from March to September. The germination period lasts approximately 5-10 days, and you can expect to harvest your crop within 30-40 days from sowing. When initially planting the seeds, space them 1-3 cm apart with a depth of 0.5 cm. As the plants grow, thin them to maintain a spacing of 10-20 cm between them.
Ensure your plants receive ample sunlight, thriving best in full sun to partial shade conditions. The soil should be well-drained, moist, and sandy to promote healthy growth. When it comes to watering, maintain a regular schedule, ensuring the soil does not dry out. Given its characteristics, this plant is a heavy feeder, so consider providing adequate nourishment to support its robust development. Follow these guidelines, and you’ll be on your way to a successful and flourishing harvest.

I have just bought all my new seeds for next year’s vegetables after having such great results this year. Budget seeds are so helpful, I’m a newbie in the veg growing world and they have been helpful in choosing the best seeds to start with etc. also much cheaper than elsewhere so if I do mess up in the future it isn’t costing me so much. I thoroughly recommend Budget Seeds for all your veg and flower seeds.
