Useful Information

Sowing & Growing

Sow wildflower garden seeds either in March and April or, if your soil is light and well-drained, in September. These seeds thrive in open, sunny positions. For annual displays, consider autumn sowing for poppies and cornflowers, while spring sowing tends to favor corncockles and corn marigolds.

Prepare the ground by clearing away all existing plants and grass. It’s crucial to eliminate robust perennial weeds such as stinging nettles, docks, and couch grass, especially in wildlife areas, where manual weeding is preferable. When hand weeding is impractical, a systemic glyphosate-based weed killer can be used, with caution exercised on still, windless days. Avoid glyphosate use in areas containing ponds and waterways.

Dig and firm the soil well, then rake to create a level seedbed. Refrain from incorporating fertilizers or manure, as they encourage grass growth, potentially overshadowing the wildflowers. Allow up to 6 weeks for the soil to settle, enabling weed seeds to germinate, which can then be removed with a hoe or weed killer.

For highly fertile soil intending to grow a perennial wildflower meadow, consider stripping away the top 5-10cm (2-4″) of soil to reduce fertility.

Use 1 gram of pure wildflower garden seeds per square meter of soil. Mixed wildflower seeds with grass should be sown at 5g per square meter. Enhance even distribution by mixing the seed with silver sand and lightly rake the area after sowing. Cover with netting to protect from birds and cats, ensuring the soil stays moist during hot, dry periods for optimal germination.
