Wild Flower Field Pansy Viola arvensis

£0.69 incl. VAT

The field pansy (Viola arvensis) is a delicate annual wildflower and a close wild relative of the common garden pansy. While it is often considered a weed in agricultural settings, particularly among cereal crops, it is also a popular addition to wildflower meadows and cottage gardens due to its hardy nature.
  • Appearance: A low-growing plant (reaching up to 20–40 cm) with small, solitary flowers roughly 15 mm across.
  • Colouring: Typically features creamy-yellow petals with a bright orange flush on the lower petal and occasional violet or purple tinges on the upper petals.
  • Identification: It is often distinguished from the similar Wild Pansy (Viola tricolor) by its smaller petals, which are usually shorter than the green sepals behind them.
  • Flowering Period: It blooms consistently from April to October.
Habitat and Ecology
  • Environment: Naturally thrives in disturbed ground, such as arable field margins, waste spaces, and roadside verges.
  • Distribution: Common across the UK and Europe, though it is less frequent in the north and west of Scotland.
  • Wildlife Value: It is self-fertile and acts as a nectar source for various butterflies, specifically the Queen of Spain Fritillary, which lays its eggs on the plant.
