The most popular Christmas tree variety in the UK is the Nordmann Fir, which is prized for its lush, deep green foliage and outstanding needle retention as the tree dries, preventing sparse-looking branches and saving time vacuuming! You can really spruce up your Christmas tree with the Nordmann Fir because of its strong branches and softer needles, which make it an excellent choice for a family tree. Seeds from true fir species are relatively straightforward to germinate and cultivate. Their dormancy period is brief and can be easily overcome through a short cold stratification process in the refrigerator. To initiate this process, soak the seeds in water for 24 hours, then drain thoroughly and place them in a zip-lock freezer bag. It is crucial to keep the seeds moist but not overly wet during their time in the fridge, which should last between 6 to 8 weeks, as improper moisture levels can hinder the effectiveness of the pre-treatment. Without this treatment, seeds are unlikely to germinate, as simply sowing untreated seeds in compost at room temperature will not suffice. Prepare a suitable container with high-quality potting compost, which can include plant pots, seed trays, or any container with drainage holes. Firm the compost gently and scatter the seeds on the surface, placing 2 to 3 seeds per cell if using plug trays. Cover the seeds with a thin layer of vermiculite or finely sieved compost, followed by a gentle watering, and maintain them at room temperature. Germination typically occurs within a few weeks, and the seedlings are generally robust, reaching heights of 2 to 5 cm in their first growing season, depending on the sowing date and care provided. However, densely sown seedlings may be susceptible to fungal diseases like “damping off,” which can lead to significant losses. Seedlings can thrive in full sunlight, provided they are well-watered and free from competing weeds. Growth will accelerate in subsequent years, and young trees should be re-potted as needed, ideally during their dormant season. After approximately three years, they will be ready for permanent planting.

I have just bought all my new seeds for next year’s vegetables after having such great results this year. Budget seeds are so helpful, I’m a newbie in the veg growing world and they have been helpful in choosing the best seeds to start with etc. also much cheaper than elsewhere so if I do mess up in the future it isn’t costing me so much. I thoroughly recommend Budget Seeds for all your veg and flower seeds.
