Useful Information

Sowing Sorghum Nigrum Seed

1. Seed Selection:
Choose healthy, viable sorghum seeds. Black or dark sorghum seeds are typically used for food, fodder, or ornamental purposes.

2. Soil Preparation:

  • Sorghum grows best in well-drained, fertile soil.
  • Loosen the soil and remove weeds.
  • Sorghum tolerates a variety of soils but prefers neutral to slightly acidic pH (6.0 to 7.5).

3. Planting Time:

  • Sow sorghum seeds when the soil temperature reaches about 15-18°C (60-65°F).
  • Usually, this is in late spring after the last frost.

4. Sowing Method:

  • You can sow seeds directly outdoors.
  • Plant seeds about 1 to 2 inches (2.5 to 5 cm) deep.
  • Space seeds about 6 to 10 inches (15 to 25 cm) apart in rows that are 30 to 36 inches (75 to 90 cm) apart to give room for mature plants.

5. Watering:

  • After sowing, water gently but thoroughly to keep the soil moist (not waterlogged).
  • Sorghum is drought-tolerant once established but needs moisture during germination and initial growth.

6. Care and Maintenance:

  • Thin seedlings if needed to maintain proper spacing.
  • Weed regularly to reduce competition.
  • Fertilize with balanced fertilizer if soil nutrients are low.

7. Growth and Harvest:

  • Sorghum grows over 3 to 4 months depending on variety and conditions.
  • Harvest grains when seed heads are mature and dry
