Starting at £0.99

Alfalfa, scientifically known as Medicago sativa, is a perennial flowering plant in the legume family. Often referred to as the “queen of forages,” it is highly valued for its nutritional profile and agricultural benefits. Here’s an overview:

Characteristics

  • Growing Conditions: Alfalfa thrives in well-drained, fertile soils and prefers a sunny environment. It is drought-resistant once established.
  • Perennial Growth: With a deep root system, alfalfa can grow for several years, making it a lasting addition to forage systems.

Nutritional Benefits

  • High in Protein: Alfalfa is rich in protein (15-25%) and essential vitamins and minerals, making it an ideal feed for livestock, particularly dairy cattle and horses.
  • Digestible Fiber: Its high fiber content supports healthy digestion in animals.

Uses

  1. Animal Feed: Commonly used in hay and silage forms, it’s a staple in diets for cattle, sheep, goats, and equines.
  2. Soil Improvement: Alfalfa efficiently fixes nitrogen in the soil, improving soil fertility and structure.
  3. Cover Crop: It can be used as a cover crop to suppress weeds and prevent soil erosion.

Cultivation Tips

  • Seeding: Best sown in spring or late summer when soil temperatures are above 60°F (15°C).
  • Maintenance: Regular cutting encourages growth; however, allow adequate regrowth time before the next harvest.
  • Watering: While drought-resistant, consistent moisture during establishment is crucial.

Challenges

  • Pests and Diseases: Alfalfa can be susceptible to pests like aphids and various fungal diseases, necessitating careful management.
  • Weed Competition: Effective weed control is important during the establishment phase.

Alfalfa is a highly nutritious and versatile forage crop that contributes to sustainable agriculture and enhances livestock nutrition

Useful Information

When sowing Lucerne, it thrives in soils with good structural integrity. Use a seeding rate of 2g per square meter, and if you’re creating a custom grass seed mixture, ensure that Lucerne Alfalfa constitutes only 3% of the total mix. If the soil is compacted, it’s essential to loosen it before planting. Prior to sowing, the topsoil should be leveled and finely prepared, and the seeds should be sown at a depth of 1-2cm.

Choose to sow in either spring or late summer/early autumn. Lucerne benefits from a symbiotic relationship with Rhizobium bacteria in its root nodules, enabling it to naturally extract nitrogen from the atmosphere. These seeds come with the added advantage of being pre-coated with a Rhizobia inoculant.
