Beetroot Boltardy: A Reliable and Flavourful Choice for Your Garden

Boltardy Beetroot is a popular variety known for its exceptional flavour, smooth texture, and reliable performance. This beetroot is particularly favoured by gardeners for its ability to resist bolting, making it an excellent choice for both home gardens and commercial production.

Characteristics of Boltardy Beetroot

  • Appearance: Boltardy beetroots are typically round to oval in shape, with a smooth, deep red skin. The flesh is vibrant red and has a tender texture, making it visually appealing and perfect for various culinary uses.
  • Flavor Profile: Known for its sweet, earthy flavour, Boltardy beets are less likely to develop a strong, bitter taste compared to some other varieties. Their mild flavour makes them versatile for both raw and cooked dishes.
  • Growth Habit: Boltardy beetroots are a fast-maturing variety, typically ready to harvest in about 50 to 60 days from sowing. They are well-suited for a range of growing conditions and can be planted in both spring and autumn

Useful Information

Sowing & Growing

It is very important to remember that most beetroot seeds are clusters of more than one seed. This means if you sow one seed, you will have three to five seedlings germinating. These have to be thinned to one seedling soon after germination otherwise the beetroot will remain very small. Direct sow beetroot seeds outdoors from March to July in a weed free, sunny position in fertile, light, well-drained soil. Sow beetroot seeds thinly in shallow drills at a depth of 3cm (1″) and 30cm (12″) apart. Germination will usually take 12 to 24 days. When large enough to handle, thin out the seedlings within each row to 10cm (4″) apart.
