Watermelon Sugar Baby, scientifically known as Citrullus lanatus, is an exceptionally prolific cultivar. These round melons, often referred to as “picnic” or “icebox” watermelons, are ideal for smaller families. True to its name, the Sugar Baby watermelon is compact enough to easily fit into an icebox. Typically, these melons weigh between 8 to 10 pounds (4-5 kg).

Sowing & Growing
Watermelon is an annual plant with an optimal temperature range of 20 – 25°C for successful germination, which takes approximately 5 to 10 days, leading to maturity in 60-90 days. It thrives best in a full sun, sheltered location. To prepare the soil, it is recommended to dig and incorporate ample amounts of well-rotted compost or farmyard manure over the winter. Watermelons flourish in sunny and warm environments.
Sow the seeds in pots containing free-draining seed-sowing mix, with a depth of 1cm (½in), during the months of April to May. Place these pots in a propagator, airing cupboard, or similar location, maintaining a temperature range of around 20-25°C until germination occurs, typically within 5-10 days. Once the first true leaves emerge, transplant the seedlings into 13cm (5in) pots for further growth.
When ready for planting out, space the seedlings 24 inches apart after a careful hardening-off period, ensuring that all risks of frost have passed. Opt for a warm and sheltered position, preferably in full sun. Alternatively, for a more dependable crop, consider cultivating watermelons under glass.
Proper care involves regular watering and feeding with liquid fertilizer every 14 days. Pinch out the growing point at the 4-leaf stage and train the laterals (side-shoots) along the row. Hand pollination may be necessary at this stage.
Come harvest time, tapping the watermelon with your knuckles is a reliable method for determining ripeness. A hollow sound indicates that the watermelon is ripe and ready for picking.
