Useful Information

Sowing & Growing

For sowing, plant seeds in autumn/winter in small pots filled with compost, either in a cold frame or greenhouse. Place 2 or 3 seeds per pot, burying them about 1-2cm deep. Expect germination within 1-3 weeks. Once the seedlings are established (around 10cm tall), pinch out the tips to promote bushier growth. Plant them outdoors in spring, three seedlings per station to cover approximately 30-50cm. Ideal conditions include a sunny location, fertile well-drained soil, and ample watering.

Alternatively, sow in spring either in small pots or directly in the ground. If using pot-grown plants, transplant them into a sunny spot in the garden. Autumn/winter sowings tend to flower earlier than spring sowings.

The growth cycle involves plants growing in spring, flowering in summer, and then naturally dying in late summer, at which point they can be removed. If grown in pots, ensure they receive sufficient water. Regularly fertilize potted plants during the flowering period. Provide support, such as a trellis or wires, or encourage them to climb through other tall plants. It may be necessary to tie-in plants as they climb. Regular deadheading is recommended to prolong the flowering period, ensuring fragrant cut flowers throughout the summer.
