Sainfoin

£0.39 incl. VAT

Sainfoin, Onobrychis Viciifolia, is easily identified as it is our only member of the pea family with a stalked spike of bright pink flowers. Flowering occurs from June to August and pollination is mainly by bumble bees, perfect for growing for your pets, fast growing Sainfoin is a silage or hay crop that can also be grazed. It is drought-resistant, needs no nitrogen fertiliser, does not cause bloat and is a natural anthelmintic.

In these times of rising fertiliser, feed and veterinary drug prices, it is a crop that can be of huge benefit to farmers, and the environment. Sainfoin thrives on free draining, alkaline and calcareous soils (pH6.2 or above).  It is not suitable for moisture-retentive or acidic ground. Probably best sown in the autumn, in common with many members of the pea family, sainfoin seed exhibits hard-coat dormancy. If it is important to have the maximum germination rate in the shortest period of time you could try a light scarification.

Useful Information

Sowing & Growing

If sown as a wildflower, it best to scarify the area to disturb / expose the soil and sow in late summer or early spring as the soil warms.  Ideally the seed should be lightly covered or at least rolled in or walked over to ensure good soil contact. Sown as a single crop on bare/clean soil (10 Gram per Sq Metre).  Reduce this by 75% if being introduced to an established grass area.
