Sowing & Growing
Sow from April to June. For early sowings, plant 3 seeds per 8cm (3in) pot filled with seed-sowing compost under glass at 16°C. Outdoor sowings can start from May onward directly into the growing site, placing seeds 5cm (2in) deep. Sow 2-3 seeds every 20-30cm (8-12in) apart, with rows spaced 60cm (24in) apart.
Gradually harden off seedlings sown under glass before planting them outside in late May, adhering to the recommended spacing, once all risk of frost has passed. Place a support cane at each planting station, or create circular plantings with canes joined at the centre to form a wigwam. For an optimum crop, space canes 30-45cm (12-18″) apart, planting 3 beans per cane. Water regularly during dry weather.
Maturity occurs from July to September. Always ensure the site is not affected by wind, as constant exposure to strong winds can cause plants to burn and die.
To address flower drop, Percy Thrower suggested that slightly acidic soil might be the main cause. Applying a dusting of lime to the soil in early winter over the designated runner bean area for the next year has been tested and proven effective.
Nutritionally, Runner Beans are a good source of Vitamin C, Folic acid, and Iron, with a high fibre content.

I have just bought all my new seeds for next year’s vegetables after having such great results this year. Budget seeds are so helpful, I’m a newbie in the veg growing world and they have been helpful in choosing the best seeds to start with etc. also much cheaper than elsewhere so if I do mess up in the future it isn’t costing me so much. I thoroughly recommend Budget Seeds for all your veg and flower seeds.
