Sowing & Growing
Ensure the chosen growing location exhibits proper drainage and sufficient humus content to prevent rapid drying of the soil. For an early crop, sow sweet corn in early spring under cover, using 3-inch pots and planting 1 inch deep. Maintain a minimum temperature of 10°C, as warmth enhances germination rates. Prior to planting out, harden off the seedlings. Alternatively, sow the seeds directly outside in late spring, leaving 18 inches between plants and rows. It’s crucial to plant sweet corn in blocks, not as a single row, to ensure effective pollination. Cover any emerging roots at the base with mulch or old compost to retain moisture. During hot weather and flowering, prevent the crop from drying out. Each plant typically yields 1-2 cobs; assess ripeness by checking for chocolate brown silks. When fully ripe, a creamy liquid should be expressed when squeezing the grains.

I have just bought all my new seeds for next year’s vegetables after having such great results this year. Budget seeds are so helpful, I’m a newbie in the veg growing world and they have been helpful in choosing the best seeds to start with etc. also much cheaper than elsewhere so if I do mess up in the future it isn’t costing me so much. I thoroughly recommend Budget Seeds for all your veg and flower seeds.
