Long, red stems with a sweet, delectable flavour. Despite being an old cultivar, it is dependable, early, and easy to grow. Once planted, it should not be relocated and thrives in portions of the vegetable garden or allotment that are fertile and well-drained. It also benefits from a thick layer of well-rotted compost or manure every year.
PLANT THE CROWNS 2 INCHES BELOW THE SURFACE OF THE SOIL 3-4 FT APART. IF PLANTED TOO CLOSELY THE PLANTS WILL GROW SMALLER AND LESS PRODUCTIVE. FIRM THE SOIL GENTLY AND WATER WELL. RHUBARB LIKES REGULAR WATER, BUT MATURE PLANTS ARE QUITE DROUGHT RESISTANT. IT IS BEST TO ALLOW NEW PLANTS TO BECOME ESTABLISHED FOR A YEAR BEFORE HARVESTING YOUR FIRST CROP. A LAYER OF MULCH OVER THE BED, ONCE THE GROUND FREEZES WILL PROTECT THE ROOTS FROM DRYING OUT. OTHERWISE THE PLANTS WILL BE FINE.
