Sowing & Growing
Begin sowing chili seeds in a greenhouse between early February and April to provide the warmth and extended period necessary for fruiting. While outdoor sowing is possible from early April in warmer southern regions, indoor cultivation is recommended for a sustained heat supply. Originating from South America, chili seeds prefer higher temperatures, with an optimal germination range of 27°C-32°C. Although some growth is possible above 21°C, temperatures below the optimum range may result in more unpredictable germination.
Soil and Seeding: Opt for a loam-based seed and potting-on compost to ensure proper drainage, and sow several seeds 5mm deep in a seed tray or pot. When two true leaves emerge (the second set of leaves), delicately lift and transplant the plant, holding it by the true leaves to avoid stem damage. Support the root system by holding a plant label underneath while gripping the true leaves.
Germination and Transplanting: For optimal results, place the tray or pot in a thermostatically-controlled propagator. Alternatively, use a heated tray/mat for germination. Once the seedlings reach a height of 8cm-15cm, transplant them to a 9cm pot. Eventually, they can be repotted into a 3L/4L container or directly into the ground if open soil is available in your greenhouse/polytunnel.
Maintenance: Control greenhouse temperature with shading if needed, especially when temperatures exceed 36°C to prevent flower drop and hinder fruit setting. Maintain humidity by misting the greenhouse twice daily. When watering, use a spray bottle from the top, ensuring a balanced approach to prevent over or under-watering for optimal chili plant development.

I have just bought all my new seeds for next year’s vegetables after having such great results this year. Budget seeds are so helpful, I’m a newbie in the veg growing world and they have been helpful in choosing the best seeds to start with etc. also much cheaper than elsewhere so if I do mess up in the future it isn’t costing me so much. I thoroughly recommend Budget Seeds for all your veg and flower seeds.
