Sowing & Growing
Plant between March and May or from August to October, directly in well-prepared soil that has been thoroughly raked. Sow the seeds 3mm deep in rows spaced 30cm apart. Once the seedlings emerge, thin them to a 15cm spacing. Thriving in well-drained soil and full sunlight, these plants are well-suited for areas where the roots can enjoy a cool, moist environment, making them ideal for planting alongside paths.
It takes approximately 95 days from planting out to harvest. Ensure a sunny spot protected from strong winds for optimal growth. Well-drained soil rich in humus is crucial, and providing more humus enhances the growing conditions. Many winter squash and pumpkins have a sprawling nature and require ample space. Vining varieties need a larger area to spread, while semi-vining and bush varieties of winter squash and courgette can be more contained.
