Organic Basil Sweet Genovese

£0.49

Growing basil is relatively straightforward, making it one of the most popular herbs for kitchen use. Various varieties exist, with Genovese standing out for its aromatic qualities and serving as the traditional basil in pesto. Basil leaves prove versatile, adding flavour to salads and enhancing various Italian dishes such as pizza and pasta. Notably, it serves as the primary ingredient in pesto sauce. Fresh basil surpasses dried basil in taste, and its harvest extends throughout the summer months. The herb’s soft, vibrant green leaves and delightful fragrance make it an excellent addition to both the vegetable garden and the kitchen windowsill.

Useful Information

Start seeds indoors in March and April, ready for planting out from late May onward or after the threat of frost has passed. Sow the seeds lightly in trays or pots filled with damp compost, covering them lightly with finely sifted compost. Place the containers on a warm windowsill or in a greenhouse, ensuring the compost stays moist. Germination typically occurs within 7-10 days. Alternatively, seeds can be sown directly outdoors from June onward.

Growing in Pots: Basil thrives in warmth and sunlight, making pots advantageous for easily relocating plants throughout the day. Prevent the plants from drying out, and protect them from drying winds. Apply liquid feed every 2-3 weeks to promote robust growth.

Growing in Beds: For outdoor beds or designated herb gardens, ensure well-draining soil. Plant seedlings 30cm apart and maintain adequate watering. Apply a mulch at the base to prevent soil from drying out. Regular liquid feedings every 2-3 weeks will contribute to strong, healthy plants.

Aftercare: When watering basil, be cautious not to splash the delicate leaves. Promptly remove any emerging weeds around the base. Avoid using insecticides or fungicides, as they can taint the leaves and render them unusable.

Harvesting: Regular harvesting and consistent watering keep basil growing throughout the summer. Remove flower buds as they appear to encourage more leaf growth. Freeze fresh leaves for later use, as growing basil during winter is challenging. To preserve leaves, cut whole plants at the base, hang them upside down in a dry, warm place, and, once fully dried, crumble the leaves into a dry, airtight jar for storage.
